Chemical properties:
Colorless liquid. Fruity, slightly oily aroma. Boiling point is 90°C (1333Pa) or 104°C (2933Pa). Slightly soluble in water, soluble in fat.
Use:
Food spices. Intermediate of propylthiouracil, a therapeutic agent for hyperthyroidism.
Production method:
This product is obtained by condensing diethyl malonate with propionyl chloride and then decarboxylating it.
